i love picking up items in stardew valley, once you blow the resource up or pull up the crop or kill the enemy the items literally come over to you and they go pop pop pop pop pop and it just makes the gameplay more fun

There’s a setting in horizon to fix it but it should be the default

Horizon: Forbidden West has an option to turn off pickup animations. You can just run over an item, and it's in your inventory.

Funny thing about PacMan - picking up items DOES slow you down! Normally you are faster than the ghosts, but if you are collecting pallets, you actually get slower than them, so you have to strategize before committing to a long hallway of pickups!

this is one reason why NieR: Automata is such a masterpiece. Outside of simply leveling up, you have plug-in chips and a VERY limited capacity. if you need a little extra, you can choose to sacrifice parts of your HUD! this works both ways, as you can also activate the “auto-collect” plug-in chip, which automatically vacuums items you get close to, even if you normally couldn’t (like if you’re riding an animal).

Made me think of how Spelunky is an interesting case, where picking up and dropping items is a major gameplay mechanic; you have gold and passive items, which pick up automatically by running over them, but also there are many objects that you can only hold one in your hand at a time so crouching down to pick up items is actually really cool and fun. good pumpkin In dead cells and enter the gungeon, item pickups are fast and don't slow you down at all and money drops in those games magnetize towards you from any distance, which is great

100% legit but so rarely said. Fast paced games with slow paced items, inventory, and chest are straight pumpkin and are clearly padding for time. If a game is intentionally slow, like scary games, slow item pickups can add to the atmosphere and tension. But if you're legging it the 90% of the game and have to stop for items... what is this?!

The concept of "canon" in franchises is kinda sad. You can make a piece of art, and then many years later, someone else is hired to write the sequel, and they can just decide to completely recontextualize your piece of art in a way that will be forever changed. idk, I feel like we should judge these games and stories on their own. Ike can be gay in his own games, no matter what happens later, we don't need to dismiss Priam. His existence means nothing to the story of Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn

Generally agree, but tbh I think the process of gathering stuff to prepare was a big part of monster hunter games. Overall I think streamlining is good because you do spend more time doing what the game is about, but there was something to spending a couple minutes gathering needed supplies that made the game feel so real. As real as a game about beating dinosaurs to death with 20-foot-long swords made of their dead parents can be, that is.

...I think some of these are misunderstandings of how the game is supposed to work? Animal crossing is designed to be cozy and laidback. The point of the game is the slowdown and enjoy the small moments. Some people of course like to speed run and pay off their loans faster but I think the criticisms here are unfounded. You can just not like the game. It doesn't suck just because you have to pick up items that way.

Can we talk about how in BotW and Tears for every inventory upgrade you have to go through the dialogue and watch Hestu dance? Yeah Koroks are cute but man..

The most ridiculous thing in FF7R I found after beating the game was that there's an option to just automatically pick up items when you walk by instead of tapping a button.. WHY IS THIS NOT AUTOMATIC 😂

Something I like about Dark Souls games is that even if you loot items off of corpses, there’s a way to pick up an item and keep goin. You guard while picking it up. That does not make you stop to reach that one piece of grass on a random corpse in the middle of a poison swamp I don’t want to be in for long.
